Jezza’s Corner: Tropicarnage 2 Tournament Report

Hi Guys,

One of my old mates, Jezza, has been playing up a storm up in Townsville since moving there, and sent me a brief tournament report some time ago. After having a chat recently, I suggested that I should put it up on the blog for everyone to see what else is happening around the place and other people’s armies.

This tournament was a pre-6th Ed 1500pt tournament hosted by WW40k.

Expect to see some more articles from Jezza in the future as he is a crazy man and cranks out heaps of models to play competitively in 40k, Infinity and Flames of War. I expect there will be a bigger introduction in the future, but without further ado – here is Jezza’s Corner!.

*********

  === Jezza's Corner ===

I just finished playing in Tropicarnage 2 (www.ww40k.com) and came 4th overall!!

My Army list for 1500 points:

Chaos Space Marines - WORLD EATERS

Khârn + 8 Bezerkers + Rhino
8 Bezerkers + Personal Icon + Rhino
8 Bezerkers + Personal Icon + Rhino
8 Lesser Daemons
8 Chaos Bikes + Mark of Khorne, Melta Gun, Plasma Gun, Champion, Powerweapon
Predator - Autocannon, Sponson Lascannons
Predator - Austocannon, Sponson Lascannons

Basic Game Plan - Deploy in a group and just hammer one point with the bikes turbo boosting into the enemy lines on Turn 1 to provide a distraction, and then hit everything with mass bezerkers. Predators just hang back and shoot stuff (vehicles being the priority)

Game 1 - VS Imperial Guard. (Result – WIN)

Kill point mission, Dawn of War

Opponents army - My opponent had 4 special characters in his army, armour 12 Sentinels with plasma cannons (WTF!), and lots of sniper rifles and stealthy cover save bonuses.

I basically just hammered into one area of his army. Khârn and his squad of meat shields accounted for 1 guard squad, 2 sentinels and a Leman Russ Punisher. My predators blew one of the valkyries out of the sky. I lost mybikes (due to the Punisher) and about half a squad. As he deployed across the table I just hammered the one point with everything and then just minced around for 2 turns not trying to concede VPs as running into the gun line was silly.

Game 2 - VS Space Wolves. (Result – WIN)

5 Objectives

My opponent was a young teenager and he made a few play mistakes - but good on him for a very fluffy-wolfy theme. His Terminator rune priest (and 4 bolter marines) got gunned down early on by plasma gun fire. There was a mass melee in one spot of the board with the bezerkers landing 5 out of 6 charges. Khârn killed 6 wolves, 7 Marines, 1 Wolf Lord. Not much excitement though his wolf scouts squad decided to stand in front of 2x predators which didn’t end well for them.

Game 3 - VS Imperial Guard. (Result – Loss)

2 Objectives

Opponents army - 3 Valkyrie Gunships, 2x Manticore’s, 4 Chimeras with Vets Plasma/melta guns, Demolisher

Well this game it came down to the Tournament organiser rolling a D6 to decide if it was a draw in my favour or a loss :( -  as we couldn’t agree if one of my squads was contesting. The TO rolled a 3… sad me, as I was all over this army like a cheap suit. At the end he had 2 chimeras plus squads, 1 Valkyrie gunship and 2 manticore’s (out of ammo) left.

The guard never got out of the chimeras and just fired 5 plasma, melta guns at me a turn (!!!). So I had to charge them pop them out, take another turn of being blasted then charge them. He got lucky as when the game ended - as well as the objective in my deployment zone he contested by flying 24” with his last aircraft in front of 2 predators and a bezerker squad - alas it was not meant to be.

But this was the most enjoyable game - the guy was nice but a bit taken aback when an old chaos codex started flogging the crap out him. Once again Khârn helped out by killing the Demolisher, 12 Guardsmen (including command squad), 2x Chimeras - though he died when a kitchen sink worth of plasma and melta fire turned him to ash (curse you not having Eternal Warrior!!!) - this was the only time he died in the tournament.

Afterwards the guy apologised that it went down to a roll to see who won/draw though at the end of the tourney the results wouldn’t have changed so meh. Next time I will make a ring of figures around an objective that nothing can get near... stupid flyers contesting ground objectives.... *grumble grumble*

Game 4 - VS Ultramarines. (Result – WIN)

Kill points

Opponents army - 1 Commander, 9 Sternguard, Drop Pod, 2 Tactical Squads+ Rhinos, 2 Devastator Squads, Thunderfire Cannon, Iron Clad

This guy was a douche...so it was even better when I overran his positions in true Khorne style. :)

My Predators managed to kill a Thunderfire cannon and a Drop Pod before succumbing to the 10 Sternguards that drop podded next to me and unloaded with their combi meltas.

Essentially I left the predators to die while the rest of my army made its escape to the enemy lines. I turbo-boosted my bikes right up the guts, and after losing a few to shooting got charged by the Ironclad dread that I couldn’t hurt (AV13!!) but they held in combat.

The next turn Khârn detached from his squad (and his squad assaulted a nearby Devastator squad) assaulted the dread. Khârn only managed to take an arm off in melee and the return hit from the dread failed to wound (which my opponent was really foul about). The next turn Khârn only penetrated once but destroyed the dread (bwahahah!) and the guys nostrils started flaring.

The rest of the game was me pac-maning  his units (nom nom nom) except the Sternguard/Hero which were right on my back line.

The guy was just a jerk, remeasuring everything I charged or shot at, continually looking at my army list which he kept on his side the entire game. Khârn – Ironclad Dreadnought, 8 Marines

Game 5- VS Daemonhunters. (Result – WIN)

 5 Objectives

Opponents army - Cortez, Some Terminator psyker lord with everything, 2 Redeemer Land Raider, some psyker squad, 8ish assassins, Techmarine, 2x Jokaero, 10 Power Armour Grey Knights with halberds and stuff.

Well I thought I was screwed… but by shaking and immobilising the Land Raiders, I disrupted his steam roller and tried to keep a portion of his army at arms length while trying to overcome one bit at a time.

Bikes came through by forcing the Grey Knights to charge them which in turn let Khârn dismount the following turn and barrel into them wiping them out - 7 dead on the charge yeah!

Though the finally mobile redeemer BBQ’s the remaining bikes and some bezerkers. Khârn charged the Land raider and after 2 turns of hitting it with Gorechild, managed to destroy it.

His big scary souped up Lord tried to contest an objective in range of the predators... guess who got turned into ash (hehehehe, the look on my opponents face was priceless after telling me how protected and powerful he was).

My bezerker squad took on his assassin, Techmarine Deathsquad and I.... shot them with boltpistols and they broke and because they didn’t run away 6 inches they stayed broken and after 4 turns of them always being with 6” of the enemy never rallied - bwahahahha. I was lucky in the game as I made alot of vehicle cover saves and he failed alot of psychic checks (suck it Grey Knights! :) ). Though on Turn 7 he was trying to get a draw but everything left in his army either missed or failed to wound.

He was pretty gutted and said the army was sh!t and he was selling it.

At the end of the game he had Cotez, a Land Raider and a psyker squad left. I had 2x Predators, Khârn, 3 heavily depleted bezerker squads, Rhino, 6 Daemons left. Luckily you can claim objectives with 1 man, go the fearless bezerkers. Khârn – Land Raider, 7 Grey Knights.

Final thoughts

I had a great day rolling some dice thought I did pretty well with an old codex with a themed list.

Overall Khârn died once in 5 games and killed:

Infantry:
6 Wolves, 7 Space Wolf Marines, 1 Wolf Lord, 22 Guardsmen, 8 Ultramarines, and 7 Grey Knights

Vehicles:
2x Sentinels, Leman Punisher, Leman Russ Demolisher, 2x Chimeras, Ironclad Dreadnought, and a Land Raider Redeemer

Here are the final tournament results for the whole day.

Back in the saddle!!

Hi guys,

First up – many apologies for the hiatus for so long. Real life got in the way big time on the gaming front (I will get to my long list of excuses soon enough…) but with the release of the 6th edition of 40k I have got back into it all in a big way with all my mates.

I know I don’t have a huge following on the blog-o-sphere but I started out this blog for my own selfish motivation and to have a log to look back on. I got a real buzz out of some of the feedback I received for various projects in the past, so I would like to say thanks to everyone that chimed in. I know most people are lurkers (myself included) but please pipe up as all little bits of feedback that you give really do help people keep motivated (I am sure my fellow bloggers would agree). I will wind it back a little bit and give you a quick rundown of what I have been doing with myself since my last post, which was back in December 2010 (how embarrassing!!!).

Early 2011
Shortly after getting back from our fantastic European trip, my wife and I had an interesting proposition to consider. We have been looking at completing a major renovation on our little two bedroom workers cottage to add some bedrooms so that we could start a family. It just happened that my father-in-law wanted to sell up his place (which was only about 800m from my house) and it has all the bedrooms we wanted. Long story short – we decided that we would sell our little cottage and upgrade to a larger house.

Sounds easy doesn’t it…well it was a 6 month long nightmare (but was worth it in the end!). Just as we were getting various real estate agents in to value our cottage we discovered a nasty little pest that basically required me to fully renovate our downstairs laundry area – GAH! This pushed our plans back a bit. In the end we got it all repaired and tidied up the few remaining jobs on the house and placed it on the market. Now bear in mind this was in a very slow market to start with and our little cottage only having two bedrooms limited its appeal to some. Anyway it did sell to eventually to the two most skittish painful buyers one could come across…. and we are now in our dream house.

Mid - Late 2011
Now our new house is awesome! It’s a four bedroom house on a large block (with dual street frontage), a large double garage, pool and has a fully self-contained granny flat (READ – MAN CAVE!). Sure – like any old house there is plenty of work to do when you first move in and we had our fair share initially. The Queensland pool laws were just updated and required us to pretty much rebuild all the fencing around the pool within three months of moving in. So like crazy things we dived in and got cracking in ripping out trees, old fences and prepping the place for all new fencing and the like so we could be compliant to the new rules.

Late 2011 – Mid 2012
It is funny how life goes sometimes – just as the home front was easing back work took a bit of a different turn. Our Operations Manager resigned and I was asked to backfill the role while the company recruited a new one (while still completing my Vendor Manager job). Unfortunately this ended up taking seven months due to one issue or another with HR and the like but it did involve me working massive hours to manage our teams that look after our system and being on call 24x7 for various software releases and ensuring major incidents were being looked after. We now have a new Operations Manager and I am back in my old job but unfortunately it took a bit of a toll on my health and that had to become my primary focus.

Mid 2012 - Now
Well the health kick has been wonderful and I have managed to lose a stack of weight in the past three months. I am feeling great and still all motivated on the health front of things. I have had to move my painting area out of the Man Cave and into the study (to make room for some family moving from intrastate) – which is good as I do want to be in hear shot around the house with my wife and my cats rather than feeling antisocial painting in the shack. All the rest of the hobby stuff (scenery and eleventy billion kits) has all moved into the shed – here’s hoping summer is nice in there. Well enough of the life story I hear you say – I just wanted to give you some context of what has been going on. In a nutshell real life took a massive dump on me and the hobby had to take a back seat for an extended time.

STOP! – Hobby Time
Another thing that kinda bummed me out was the douche-baggery that GW has been pulling for some time with the ROW crap in Australia, Finecast etc. This really turned me off the hobby as well so it was good in one way to have an extended break. Boy oh boy has that changed since the rumours and subsequent release of 6th Ed came out. It has got me in a bit of frenzy especially with things like allies – it really has got my creative juices flowing! Just initial random ideas for allies include Rynn’s World PDF, Adeptus Mechanicus and other cool things. First things first are getting some basic painting out of the way.

I will leave it there at the moment but I promise to post some other rambling in the near future with my plans on my painting area and other 40k/hobby related things.

(That is actually me (in the top pic) taking a 432 out for a spin after driver training at The Tank Museum at Bovington. It was awesome fun!)

WiP Sanguinary Priests & Blood Rodeo

Hi guys,

Due to some flak I have been receiving for playing a mech army with my gaming group I have decided to build and play a Crimson Fist assault based jumper and biker army - using the Blood Angel Codex. The army list I am using is Kirby’s Blood Rodeo from the blog 3++ is the new black – I just loved the style of the army and want to give it a go. The army list is as follows:

2000 Pts - Blood Angels Roster - Blood Rodeo

HQ: Librarian (1#, 135 pts)
1 Librarian @ 135 pts (Blood Lance; The Sanguine Sword)
1 ...in Power Armour (Space Marine Bike; Bolt Pistol; Force Weapon;)

7 Bike Squad (Meltagun x2;)
1 Attack Bike (Multi-Melta;)
1 Sergeant (Power Fist;)

Total Roster Cost: 2000

Now before some people out there squeal - don't bother. As you may know I am all for using a marine army in a number of incarnations as there is so much cross over and I am not about to buy a new fleet of Rhino's or Bikes just to paint them another colour. GW gets enough money out of me. :)

So I have been madly building assault marines and have just finished my three Sanguinary Priests to use in the army. I first saw this style of Sanguinary Priest on the Painting Corps blog who found it on The Standard Template Construct. I loved this little kit bash so had a go at making my own versions from various SM box sets.

Anyway, here they are:

I am now working on building the Librarians on bikes before moving onto finishing the bike squads.

I have been in a bit of a hobby rut for the past few weeks so I am going to build as much up as I can while I am on a bit of a roll - I just hope the bits I have ordered come through before the Christmas break.

Back in the Country!

Hi guys,

Just to let you know that I am back in Australia after a 7 week holiday in Europe; so once I am over the jetlag I will be hitting the paintbrush again with a vengeance as I am pumped.

I got to spend some time at Warhammer World and visited a stack of GW stores all over Europe so I want to hit everything while the motivation is cooking.

Librarian Progress - More WiP

Hi guys,

Got a little more done on the Librarian. I ended up removing the giant book on top of his shoulders as it was just looking a bit too chunky, so I swapped it for something smaller.

Here are a few more WiP photos.

GW Whats New Today - I am in it today!!!

Hi Guys,

I am really excited by this so I wanted to share.

I entered my Ork Watch Tower into the new Games Workshop Competition "The Great Gameboard Giveaway", and had it published in the GW "Whats New Today". My cat Dala is also there (if you click on the picture).

Here is the link:
GW LINKY HERE

Some more pictures (including WiP) can be found on my blog here - BLOG LINKY HERE.

Anyway I am just over the moon on this one. It will be very cool if I can win something but I am just really happy to make it onto the corporate website. Now I am going to have to crank out some more terrain. :)

In other news - I will be heading to England soon and will be spending a couple days in Nottingham. Needless to say I will be spending at least a day (or two) at Warhammer World. I will take plenty of photos and if you live over that way and want to have a pint at Bugmans - feel free to drop me a line.

Cheers

Librarian Progress - More WiP - Face done

Hi guys,

I have been working on the Librarian over the past few days and made some progress.

I am really happy how his face has turned out and slowly working on the other details. I am trying to cover all the details and get them to pre final highlights stage. I went with the librarian yellow on the front of the tunic - as per the codex but decided to go with the red on the back side of the tunic.

I will have a go at some basic free hand detailing to put something on the edges of the red parts of the tunic. Probably just a basic border detail to help break it up.

Initially I really hated painting this model. I guess it is probably due to the amount of detail over the figure but he is starting to grow on me and I am starting to enjoy painting him.

He is still a fair way off but I wanted to share what I have been doing.

On a side note - I will probably not be entering him in at the local painting competition at GW Brisbane. I need to confirm this with the manager - however I have had a few 'discussions' with the staff and now I am lead to believe I will have either purchase a $22 figure in store or have a receipt of one to enter the comp. I explained to the staff member that there is absolutely no mention of this in the flyer (and proceeded to show the staff member said flyer) and they said that I would not be able to enter. I also explained that a mate of mine was planning on entering in the FW Renegade Psyker model - but without a receipt it's a no go.

Anyway...without going on a rant I told them kindly that if that's they way it is they can stick it up their bum in not so many words. The discussions I had with the manager was that these little painting comps were to help foster some community within the store and get gamers excited about the hobby side of things - but again GW turns it into another opportunity to gouge customers...and frankly I can't be bothered pandering to that. Their loss I guess. Anyway - more updates to follow soon.
